Cal Posts Strong APR Marks

Seven Programs Register Perfect Score; 18 Teams Tally Marks Of 990 Or Better

BERKELEY – California student-athletes registered high marks in the latest Academic Progress Rate data released by the NCAA on Tuesday, with 18 of the department's 26 measured programs tallying multi-year scores of 990 or higher.

Cal had seven of its programs record perfect multi-year marks of 1,000 or better – men's cross country, men's water polo, men's gymnastics, field hockey, women's gymnastics, women's golf and women's tennis. Another 11 teams scored 990 or higher.

Cal also achieved its second-highest overall single-year (2021-22) score ever at 990, bettering last year's mark of 989.

"Our latest set of APR scores is indicative of the fantastic work our student-athletes are doing in the classroom," Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "Their efforts, in combination with the unwavering support of so many in our Cal Family - coaches and staff, as well as the committed professionals in our Athletic Study Center - make this superb result truly special. I couldn't be more proud of our student-athletes as they continue to excel at the top public university in the country."

It's the seventh year in a row Cal's women's golf program has had a multi-year score of 1,000 and the fifth in succession for men's cross country. The Bears' women's tennis team has been perfect four years in a row.

Cal's men's basketball program jumped from a multi-year score of 970 last year to 995 this year while football recorded its second-best mark ever at 978 – a three-point improvement from last year and just one point off its all-time high. The national average for football this year was 962 and 967 for men's basketball.

The APR was created to be more of a real-time measurement of academic success than graduation rates. It is a team-based metric in which scholarship student-athletes earn one point for each team for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.
