TUCSON, Ariz. – The California softball team fell, 9-4, to Arizona in the final game of the regular season on Sunday at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
The Golden Bears (33-18-1, 9-14-1 Pac-12) got two hits apiece from
Tatum Anzaldo and
Acacia Anders. Cal had already wrapped up the No. 6 seed in next week's Pac-12 Tournament with its win on Friday and the Bears will play No. 3 seed Utah at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the quarterfinals after the Utes defeated Oregon on Sunday.
Cal got on the board first for the third time in as many games, scoring in the opening frame on an
Elon Butler RBI single but a popout and flyout left the bases full and limited the early damage.
Arizona fought back in the home half with an RBI single off of
Ashanti McDade, who made her first-career start in the circle for the Bears.
Haylei Archer took over in the second inning and the Wildcats made it a 3-1 game on three hits and a Cal fielding error.
The big frame for the Cats came in the third with six runs on three hits, including back-to-back homers off of Cal's third pitcher of the day,
Annabel Teperson.
Trailing 9-1,
Sona Halajian crushed a leadoff bomb, her fifth of the year, and Cal made it 9-4 after a
Diamond Holland RBI groundout and an Anzaldo RBI single. Teperson settled in after the home runs, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters she faced while allowing just a single.
