Weitzeil Captures Silver Medal In 400 Freestyle Relay
Cal Alumna Swims Second Leg, Takes Home Fifth Career Medal At Worlds
FUKUOKA, Japan – California alumna Abbey Weitzeil helped Team USA capture the silver medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships on Sunday at Marine Messe Fukuoka Hall.
Weitzeil, a two-time Olympian and former National Swimmer of the Year for the Golden Bears, swam the second leg of the relay and clocked a split of 52.71 to help the Americans hold off China for second place. The U.S. finished in a time of 3:31.93 while Australia won the gold medal and set a world record in the process in a time of 3:27.96. China won the bronze with a mark of 3:32.40.
It's the fifth career World Championships medal for Weitzeil, who has also won four Olympic medals.
Fellow Cal alumna Camille Cheng also swam in the 400 free relay for Hong Kong, which placed 12
th during the preliminaries.
Other Golden Bears to compete on the first day of competition at the World Championships included alumna Farida Osman (Egypt), who placed 19
th in the 100 butterfly (59.09), and rising junior
Leah Polonsky (Israel), who took 21
st in the 200 medley (2:14.05).
