BERKELEY – California men's tennis sophomore John Kim and freshman Alex Aney won twice Saturday to advance to Sunday's doubles final in the Battle in the Bay Qualifier, hosted by Cal at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
 
The fourth-seeded Golden Bears defeated teammates Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright, 8-4, in the semifinals, after beating Hawaii's Diego Dalisay and Quinn Snyder, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. The final could have been an all-Bears affair, but the top-seeded pair of Cal freshmen Jonathan Irwanto and Tim Stepanov fell to Pacific's Peter Alam and Justas Trainauskas, 8-6, in the semis. Aney and Kim face Alam and Trainauskas in Sunday's final at 1:30 p.m. PT at the Hellman Tennis Complex, with the victors qualifying to compete in the Battle in the Bay Classic from Sept. 21-24 in San Francisco.
 
In the singles round of 16, Cal junior Derrick Chen, seeded third, bested Sam De Vries of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-0, to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Nevada's Pedro Liborio on Sunday at 9 a.m. at Hellman. Ethan Schiffman also secured a Sunday quarterfinal appearance after topping UC Davis top seed Constantinos Djakouris, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The Cal freshman next faces San Francisco's Sam Edgar also at 9 a.m.
 
The Battle in the Bay Qualifier concludes on Sunday.
