BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team battled Washington to a 0-0 stalemate through 51 minutes Sunday at Edwards Stadium. But the Huskies scored in the 52nd minute, and the Golden Bears fell, 1-0.

Cal's record is now 3-2-3 (0-1-1 Pac-12). The Huskies are 3-1-3 (1-0-1).

"Obviously very disappointed not to get the win," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "I thought we had a very good first half and dictated the game and created some really good chances. We had a little bit of a flat start to the second half. They're a really difficult team to get in behind and capitalize on when you go down 1-0."

The Bears had their chances to score, including in the 17th minute, when striker Nonso Adimabua – defended tightly in the box – couldn't get a clean header on a nice cross from the flank, and in the 18th minute, when the ball found Adrian Guzman unmarked on the back post, but the midfielder shot wide.

Goalkeeper Marco Brougher got his first start of the season for the Bears. Last season, he was in goal in Seattle when Cal faced the then-top-ranked Huskies. He made three saves and helped to blunt the UW attack in the Bears' 1-0 loss.

This time, Brougher made two saves, as Washington outshot Cal, 12-8. But the Bears couldn't stop the Huskies' second-half strike, as Mani Diop slammed the ball inside the far post after assists from Cooper Brunell and Peter Kingston.

The Bears outshot the Huskies 3-2 the rest of the game. Fernando Lara took Cal's last shot, but his 22-yard blast was high, and UW held on for the shutout.

Cal continues Pac-12 play on Sept. 28 at San Diego State and on Oct. 1 at UCLA.
