Cal Beats No. 17 San Diego State 1-0

SAN DIEGO - California men's soccer's Evan Davila scored the first goal of the season by any San Diego State opponent and freshman goalkeeper Zack Andoh got a shutout in his first collegiate start Thursday night, as the Golden Bears bested the 17th-ranked and previously unbeaten Aztecs, 1-0, in a Pac-12 Conference clash at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Cal improved to 4-2-3 (1-1-1 Pac-12). SDSU is 6-1-1 (0-1-0).

"Credit to the staff in their preparation for getting ready for these guys, and credit to our guys for applying the information given to them," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "We did a good job, especially in the first half, and then had to weather the storm a little bit in the second half against a good San Diego State team. We're thrilled about the result, and hopefully we can use this momentum on Sunday against UCLA."

The goal came in the 21st minute, as Davila took a pass from Juan Martinez, dribbled closer to the SDSU box and then played a 1-2 with Rohan McEligot. The senior midfielder blasted a 23-yard shot that beat goalkeeper Logan Erb to the far post.

"It felt great," Davila said. "I sent a text out to the team at the beginning of the week, letting them know we had a rare opportunity to make an impact against a team having a good season and to possibly score a goal against a team that hadn't allowed one yet and was undefeated. And the goal was huge."

Andoh, who had previously played twice off the bench, made four saves in his first start to preserve the win. He made three of those saves in the first half, including stops on dangerous chances by forward Rommee Jaridly in the 18th and 39th minutes.

Cal took the 1-0 lead into the break.

The Bears had a 3-1 shots on goal advantage in the second half, with those chances including a point-blank header by defender Kevin Carmichael that Erb tipped over his crossbar and a long-range blast by Wyatt Meyer that Erb also saved. SDSU came close on a few occasions, including a 77th-minute blast by Seth Clark that went wide.

Cal's last shot came in the 88th minute, when forward Nonso Adimabua had a short-range chance deflected out for a corner kick. In the end, the Bears held on for the 1-0 victory.

The Bears end their short road trip Sunday at 2 p.m. PT, when they face the Bruins in Los Angeles.
