Valera Named MPSF’s First Player Of The Week
Junior Contributed To Team-High 25 Goals
BERKELEY - California men's water polo junior attacker Roberto Valera was named the first MPSF Player of the Week of the 2023 season, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced Monday.
The two-time ACWPC All-American helped lead the Golden Bears to an undefeated start to the year at the Triton Invitational, contributing to 25 goals in just four games. This is his first career weekly conference honor.
Along with registering a whopping 15 assists to go with seven earned exclusions over the final three games in La Jolla, Valera found the back of the net 10 times himself, tying teammate Max Casabella for team-high honors. The Martorell, Spain native scored multiple goals in all four contests, including back-to-back games with three goals and six assists in wins of 20-5 over No. 11 UC San Diego and 16-10 against No. 7 UC Santa Barbara.
Valera's efforts have helped get Cal out to a 5-0 start for the third consecutive season. He and the Bears will head to Los Angeles for their next game against No. 2 USC Saturday at 1 p.m.
