BERKELEY- The California women's soccer team (2-2-1) battled to a scoreless draw with No. 8 Santa Clara (6-0-1) Thursday afternoon, ending a six-match win streak for the Broncos.
The two teams totaled just three shots on goal in a match that turned out to be a gritty defensive clinic. Santa Clara won the shot battle 8-3 but placed just two on frame to Cal's one. The Golden Bears are the only team to shutout the nationally ranked Broncos this season.
The first half was fairly even with each team putting up a pair of shots and the Bears winning the possession battle 58%-42%. The Broncos' best chance came early in the match with Mailin Orozco getting inside the eight-yard box but her shot rolled wide of the left post.
The second period saw the SCU offense get more aggressive with its attack taking six shots to Cal's one and taking all five corner kicks in the half. Despite the flurry from the Broncos, the Bears refused to break thanks to backline members
Kylie Kerr,
Courtney Boone, and
Malia McMahon, who all played the full 90 minutes. Freshman
Reese Doherty earned her first career start and went wire-to-wire with that group as well.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Teagan Wy earned her second-straight clean sheet and added a pair of saves. She has now allowed just one goal in her last three starts.
