Class At 28 After Additions Of Jonathan Brady, Victor Stoffel
California announced the addition of two football student-athletes from the transfer portal Friday to increase the size of its 2024 recruiting class to 28 members with wide receiver Jonathan Brady and offensive tackle Victor Stoffel (Temple) being the most recent players to join the Golden Bears.
Brady played in 28 games with 21 starts in two seasons at New Mexico State as a 2022 freshman and 2023 sophomore, contributing 62 receptions for 931 yards receiving with seven touchdown catches. He posted all of his receiving career bests as a sophomore with 39 receptions, 621 yards receiving and four touchdowns when he played in all 15 games for a 10-5 New Mexico State squad that won eight straight games at one point, and played in the Conference USA Championship and Isleta New Mexico Bowl.
Stoffel played in 35 games with 20 starts including each of his last 19 contests possible over the final two seasons of his five campaigns at Temple (2019-23). Stoffel started all 12 games at right tackle as a 2023 fifth-year junior and earned honorable mention All-American Athletic Conference honors after being named the Midseason AAC Lineman of the Year and an honorable mention All-American by College Football Network. The Owls led the AAC and ranked No. 6 nationally in fewest sacks allowed (0.83 per game) during his 2022 sophomore campaign before being second in the league, as well as No. 29 nationally during his junior campaign (1.42 per game).
Both of Friday's additions join Cal this month to increase the program's number of mid-year enrollees to 19, including 13 transfers and six from the high school ranks.
Other transfers in Berkeley this month include ILB Teddye Buchanan (UC Davis), RB Kadarius Calloway (Old Dominion), PK Ryan Coe (North Carolina), DB Isaiah Crosby (Trinity Valley Community College), DB Marcus Harris (Idaho), DL Aidan Keanaaina (Notre Dame), WR Mikey Matthews (Utah), WR Tobias Merriweather (Notre Dame), OL Rush Reimer (Montana State), QB Chandler Rogers (North Texas) and DB Ja'Ir Smith (College of San Mateo).
Cal ranks as high as No. 6 nationally in the On3 transfer portal rankings for 2024, while Matthews (No. 8 wide receiver), Buchanan (No. 9 linebacker), Coe (No. 10 placekicker), Reimer (No. 15 offensive tackle), Stoffel (No. 15 interior offensive lineman), Harris (No. 16 cornerback) and Chandler Rogers (No. 20 quarterback) each rank in the top 20 for their position. Matthews is also the No. 47 player overall.
Six high schoolers – DB Dayday Aupiu, DL BJ Canady, LB Luke Ferrelli, OL Tyler Knape, WR Josiah Martin and LB Eze Osondu – will also join the Bears this month.
The remainder of the group that has been announced to date are also all high schoolers – QB EJ Caminong, DB Brooklyn Cheek, OL Syris Corley, TE Camden Jones, DL Legend Journey, OL Aiden Newbill, DL Michael-Anthony Okwura, WR Trevor Rogers and RB Jamaal Wiley – and will join the Bears in June.
The class of 2024 includes an FCS AP All-American in Harris, a prep state champion in Trevor Rogers, and an experienced quarterback who has thrown for over 7,000 passing yards and 53 scores in Chandler Rogers.
Smith is ESPN's second-ranked junior college cornerback and 10th-best player overall, while Crosby is 247Sports No. 5 JUCO safety. Caminong is ranked No. 26 among ESPN's top high school pocket passers and six others have their best position ranking among the top 60 prep players nationally at their position in Jones (On3 Consensus' No. 35 tight end), Canady (247Sports' No. 46 defensive lineman), Trevor Rogers (ESPN's No. 51 wide receiver), Wiley (ESPN's No. 52 running back), Cheek (On3's No. 55 safety) and Aupiu (ESPN's No. 57 safety).
Ten members of the 2024 class call Texas home, while seven are from California followed by two from Washington, and one each from Colorado, Kansas, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. The Bears also have one signee in Stoffel who hails from Stockholm, Sweden.
The group includes 15 on the offensive side of the ball (5 OL, 5 WR, 2 QB, 2 RB, 1 TE), 12 on defense (5 DB, 4 DL, 2 LB, 1 ILB) and one placekicker.
