Bears Defeat Washington State In Overtime

Jaylon Tyson's 30 Points Lift Cal To 81-75 Victory

BERKELEY – Jaylon Tyson tied a career-high with 30 points, Fardaws Aimaq posted his 12th double-double of the season and the California men's basketball team led for the duration of overtime to beat Washington State 81-75 in Haas Pavilion on Saturday.

Cal (7-12, 3-5 Pac-12) snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Cougars (13-6, 4-4) and earned a weekend split with the Washington schools in the process.

Less than 48 hours after the Golden Bears suffered a buzzer-beating loss to Washington, the Cougars' Myles Rice buried a 3-pointer as time expired to knot the game at 68 and force overtime. Jalen Celestine's 3-pointer gave the Bears a 71-68 lead in the extra period and they maintained the lead the rest of the way.

"Man, we needed it. Losing close ones is obviously always tough," Aimaq said. "We've been in this situation before. Just to see that we're growing from previous games and mistakes we made in the past is huge. It's the right steps that we're taking."

Rice's jumper with 2:03 remaining in regulation gave the Cougars a 65-58 lead before Cal went on a 10-0 run, fueled by a 3-pointer and layup from Tyson.

The Bears owned a 36-29 halftime advantage, but fell behind by as many as seven points as they opened the second half on a 2-for-17 shooting stretch.

Aimaq finished with 18 points and 14 boards, while Tyson tallied nine rebounds and five assists to go along with his 30-point performance. Jalen Cone added 15 points with three 3-pointers. Aimaq, Cone and Tyson combined for 63 of Cal's 81 points.

It was the second time in less than two weeks Tyson – the Pac-12's leading scorer (21.0 points per game – has scored 30, having previously done so in an 82-78 rally against Colorado on Jan. 10.

The Golden Bears host Stanford on Friday, Jan. 26 in Haas Pavilion. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. PST with FS1 televising the rivalry contest.
