Williams Claims Third MPSF Player Of The Week Award
Goalkeeper Earns Conference’s First Honor Of 2024
Following one of the most prolific three-game stretches of her career, California women's water polo goalkeeper Isabel Williams was named the first MPSF Player of the Week of the 2024 season, the conference announced Tuesday.
The two-time ACWPC All-American averaged 14.7 saves per game as she helped lead the Golden Bears to a 3-0 weekend at Fresno State's Polo-Palooza with wins over three top-13 teams. Behind Williams' 44 saves and five steals, Cal allowed just 5.7 goals per game, getting out to one of its best defensive starts to a year in recent memory.
Williams tied a career high with 18 saves in the Bears' 16-7 win over No. 13 Michigan, a game which saw her reach the 600 career-save milestone and move to No. 4 on the program's all-time saves list. She also registered four steals and an assist.
One day earlier, Williams tallied 14 saves in a 13-4 win over No. 11 UC Davis and 12 more in an 8-6 victory over No. 5 UC Irvine. The 10 goals allowed were the second fewest the Bears have allowed through two games over the last nine seasons.
This is the third career MPSF Player of the Week honor for Williams and the first since her breakout 2022 season.
The Bears will return to Spieker Aquatics Complex this weekend to host the annual Cal Cup. They will face No. 11 UC Davis at 2 p.m. PT on Sunday following Saturday exhibitions against No. 1 Stanford (12 p.m.) and the USA Youth National Team (3 p.m.) and a Sunday morning exhibition with No. 3 UCLA (9:30 a.m.).
