SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 18 California field hockey team (6-5, 0-5 ACC) fell to No. 14 Syracuse (10-3, 4-2 ACC), 2-1, on Sunday at J.S. Coyne Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Golden Bears came out aggressive in the opening frame en route to five shot attempts compared to only one by the Orange. Junior
Olivia Sharratt scored the opening goal late in the period off the assist from senior
Sydney Decher to take a 1-0 advantage into the second period.
Syracuse picked up the intensity in the second quarter after tallying five shot attempts and three corners in the frame while limiting the Bears to zero shot attempts. The Orange scored the equalizing goal late in the first half off of a corner.
Defense was the story of the second half as neither team could capitalize on its scoring opportunities. Cal faced nine shots in the half and recorded four saves during that span. Despite five shot attempts and three corners in the fourth period, the Bears couldn't secure the go-ahead goal.
Cal had the opportunity to seal the game after earning a penalty corner 40 seconds into overtime. The Orange managed to fend off the Bears' only shot attempt in the frame, as they went on to score the game-winning goal at the 62-minute mark.
Cal will remain on the road to take on Indiana on Friday at 9 a.m. PT at Deborah Tobias Field in Bloomington, Ind.
