STOCKTON – Three Golden Bears are tied for 19th individually after shooting under-par first rounds at the Pacific Invitational on Monday at Stockton Country Club. The California men's golf team ended the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament in a tie for fifth place with a 3-under-par 281.
 
San Diego (-12) is the leader after 19 holes played, with host Pacific (-9), Grand Canyon (-8) and California Baptist (-8) separating the Bears from the top of the leaderboard. The Cal lineup was paced by 1-under-par 70s by Daniel Heo – who already owns two top-six finishes in as many tournaments this fall – freshman Ziqin (Eric) Zhou, who made his collegiate stroke-play debut, and fellow rookie Matthew Miyamoto.
 
Senior Papon Sawatyanon, playing as an individual, carded the best round by a Bear on Monday with a 2-under-par 69. Sawatyanon teed off hole 10 and got off to a hot start, tallying birdies on holes 12, 17 and 18 to go along with an eagle on hole 14 for a 4-under-par 32 on the back nine. He's tied for 11th individually entering the final 36 holes.

The Bears will start round two between 8:30-9:06 a.m. PT on hole 1 Tuesday. They'll play alongside California Baptist (-8) and Washington State (-3). Sawatyanon, playing as an individual, will tee off hole 10 at 8:30 a.m. PT.
