Bears Compete At First ACC Championships
Cal Men Finish Ninth; Women Take 15th Place
CARY, N.C.- California's men's and women's cross country teams competed at their first ACC championships on Friday morning, with the Golden Bears' men taking ninth place while the women captured 15th in the 18-team field. Carrick Denker was Cal's top finisher on the men's side while Addie Johnson led the way for the women. Both runners placed in the top-40. Collectively, 19 Cal runners broke their season bests or personal records.
Denker, who has been the Bears' top finisher in all of his races this season, set a personal record of 23:09.4 and took 28th place overall. Graduate student Garrett MacQuiddy also established a season best with a 23:30.0 to finish 48th Junior Caden Carney (69th) posted another season best with a time of 23:48.9 as did Justin Pretre (74th), who earned a personal record in 23:54.3.
"Seniors Carrick Denker and Garrett MacQuiddy did a nice job navigating the race with two solid performances. Carrick has been incredibly consistent this season. He has been a terrific captain and great leader for the team," said Cal Head Coach Bobby Lockhart.
Johnson was Cal's top finisher for the third time this season and set her personal best in the 6k with a time of 20:26.7, which was good for 38th place. Sophomore Amelia Wardle-Stacey posted a season-best mark of 20:56.9 (72nd).
"Addie Johnson put together another impressive run," Cal head coach Bobby Lockhart said. "She got out a little slow, but navigated the final 4 km well and had the best race of her career. Amelia Wardle-Stacey did a fantastic job in just her second race of the season. She's come a long way and I'm excited to see what she can do in two weeks."
