Cal Track & Field Signs All-American Thrower Giavonna Meeks

Vanderbilt Transfer Competed At 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials

BERKELEY – California track & field announced the signing Friday of Vanderbilt transfer thrower Giavonna Meeks, who will join the team in time for the 2025 indoor season. An All-American weight thrower and the 23rd-ranked women's hammer thrower in the United States in 2024, Meeks has three indoor and outdoor seasons of collegiate eligibility left.

"I am very happy and excited that Giavonna is joining our program," said assistant coach Mohamad Saatara, who leads the throws unit. "She is one of the best young throwers in the NCAA and the United States, with great championship experience at the SEC, NCAA and national levels in her career. Giavonna is an outstanding person and will be a great teammate as well as an incredible complement to our throws group."

Meeks has a personal best of 23.04m (75-7.25) in the indoor weight throw, which would put her at No. 2 behind program legend and school record-holder Camryn Rogers on Cal's all-time list. Her hammer PR of 66.09m (216-10) would rank third behind Rogers and fellow Cal great Anna Purchase in the team record books.

During her two years at Vanderbilt, Meeks established herself as one of the best throwers in Commodores history, claiming program records in the weight throw and hammer throw while also ranking sixth on their all-time lists in the discus, indoor shot put and outdoor shot put. As a freshman, she redshirted the indoor season and finished up the outdoor season with championship titles at the USA Track & Field (USATF) U20 Outdoor Championships and the Pan American U20 Championships, both in the hammer throw. The following year, she was named the SEC Co-Freshman Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and earned First-Team All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Meeks also appeared at the USATF Olympic Trials this past summer, finishing 17th in the women's hammer competition.

A native of Denver, Colorado, Meeks attended Northfield High School and was a letterwinner in both basketball and track & field. She earned two state titles in the discus (2021-22) and one in the shot put (2022); in 2022, she also earned titles in the weight throw and hammer throw at the Nike Indoor and Outdoor Nationals, respectively. Following her senior season, Meeks competed in the shot put, hammer and discus at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships, earning a bronze medal in the latter event.
