Cal Qualifies For NCAA Championships in 100-Yard Breaststroke and 400-Yard Medley Relay

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4 California men's swimming & diving team continued to showcase its depth on the third day of the Minnesota Invitational after winning five of the seven events at the Jean K Freeman Aquatic Center while recording three national top 10 times and two NCAA Championships qualifying times on Friday. 
 
In the first event of the evening, the 100-yard butterfly, three Bears placed in the top eight led by Samuel Quarles with a time of 46.04, improving on his NCAA B-cut time. August Vetsch (46.66) took fourth, while Frank Applebaum (46.84) finished in sixth. Vetsch also improved his NCAA B-cut time, which he recorded in the morning session.
 
In the 400-yard individual medley, Humberto Najera claimed first-place honors after clocking the eighth-fastest time in the country this season in a time of 3:46.84. Tyler Kopp followed behind to take second in a time of 3:46.92 while Carter Lancaster took third with a time of 3:47.11. Kopp secured an NCAA B-cut time as Najera and Lancaster improved their NCAA B-cut times from the morning session.
 
The Bears' depth was on full display after capturing the top five places with NCAA B-cut times in the 200-yard freestyle. Gabriel Jett secured his second victory of the meet with a time of 1:32.13, his best time of the season. Nans Mazellier (1:33.02), Trent Frandson (1:33.77), Keaton Jones (1:34.47) and Nikolas Antoniou (1:34.47) rounded out the top five finishers. Thackston McMullan placed seventh with a time of 1:36.64.
 
Cal continued to showcase its depth after five Bears claimed five of the top eight spots in the A-final of the 100-yard breaststroke. Yamato Okadome led the way after securing a blistering time of 50.87, the third-fastest time in the nation this season, to earn an NCAA A-cut time. It also placed him fourth in program history in the event. Hank Rivers followed behind to take second (51.63) while Luca Pusateri Gissendaner placed fourth (52.39) and Jacob Soderlund (52.94) and Zachary Tan (53.20) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Outside of Okadome, the other Bears in the A-final clocked NCAA B-cut times.
 
The Bears took the top six spots in the 100-yard backstroke led by Destin Lasco who clocked the ninth-fastest time in the country to secure an NCAA B-cut time of 45.23. Evan Petty (45.62), Lucca Battaglini (46.00), Bjorn Seeliger (46.32), Kai Crews (46.38) and Ziyad Saleem (46.54) clocked NCAA B-cut times. Tommy Roder placed eighth in a B-cut time of 46.83.
 
In the B-final of the 100-yard backstroke, Eddy Huang cliched an NCAA B-cut time of 47.08.
 
In the final swimming event of the evening, Cal's A lineup of Jett, Okadome, Quarles and Seeliger finished first in the 400-yard medley relay with an NCAA A-cut time of 3:03.17, which is the fifth-fastest time in the country this season.
 
In the three-meter dive, Geoffrey Vavitsas placed third with a score of 374.70.
 
Through the third day of competition, the Bears lead with 1427 points. Rounding out the standings are Harvard (818), Minnesota (771), UNLV (547.5) and Denver (429.5).
 
The meet concludes tomorrow starting at 8 a.m. PT, with the prelims of the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly.
