Junior David Foster (right) won the men's invitational 60m with a school-record time of 6.54.
California track & field closed out its weekend with yet another standout day, posting a veritable cornucopia of impressive times and marks that included three all-time program bests, five podium finishes, 17 total personal records and an additional special milestone.
Most the Golden Bears competed at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where many of the day's highlights belonged to the sprints and hurdles squad. Juniors
David Foster (6.54) and
Makhaila Mills (7.26) re-set their own program records in the 60m invitational races, respectively placing first and second in the final. Senior
Chase Williams, meanwhile, finished close behind Foster in the same contest with a third-place time of 6.68 to better his own program No. 2 mark. In the unseeded men's 60m, junior
Christian Trapps posted a time of 6.93 to take third place overall for Cal's fourth sprints podium finish.
An impressive number of the sprinters set additional personal bests. Other Cal men's 60m runners who improved their old times included senior
George Monroe (6.84), senior
Mason Mangum (6.88) and freshman
Javon Hampton Jr. (6.97); the women had senior
Ryan Lacefield (7.55), senior
Masina Mayo (7.62), junior
Jaymie Ruskovich (7.74) and freshman
Mari Testa (7.76). Lacefield followed that up by crushing her PR in the women's invitational 400m, shaving her time down to 54.98 for the fifth-best in program history. Not to be outdone, junior
Isaiah Shaw posted a heat-winning time of 47.13 in the men's invitational 400m, good for the third-best time on Cal's top-10 list. Sophomore
Jayden Hill also set a personal record in the 400m, taking nearly a second off her best time to finish the race at 56.21. Finally, in the men's 60m hurdles, freshman
Donovan Bradley improved his own program No. 4 time to 7.80 and took fourth place in the final; on the women's side, sophomore
Torre Anderson set her own PR of 8.93.
The Bears posted three additional program top-10s in the other events, as well as an outright event win. Junior
Caisa-Marie Lindfors made her Cal debut in the women's shot put and broke a 23-year-old school record on her first legal throw, finishing fourth at 16.53m (54-2.75) for a new personal best. Over at the women's triple jump, classmate
Busola Akinduro earned her second program top-10 mark of the meet, leaping to a massive PR of 13.25m (43-5.75) to finish fourth overall and rise to third-best in school history. Fellow senior
Amari Turner broke her tie for the program No. 3 pole vault mark to take outright control of the spot, clearing the bar at 4.23m (13-10.5) to take fourth place in the field. Finally, senior
Jeff Duensing closed out the meet with a winning 18.30m (60-0.5) in the men's shot put, where redshirt freshman
Nick Godbehere also posted a personal-best 17.77m (58-3.75).
Meanwhile, over in Boston, senior
Garrett MacQuiddy represented the Bears splendidly at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational by posting his third career sub-four mile (3:58.75), which was just .08 over his personal record.
"Today was definitely a great validation of my early season fitness," he said. "It feels wild to say that it's my third time under four minutes, and all three came in my three most recent mile races, so it's great to be consistently in shape. I feel like I'm starting off the season on the right foot."
Cal also fielded distance runners at the Husky Classic in Seattle. Senior
Carrick Denker led the squad's men's milers with a time of 4:04.02, while sophomore
Georgia McCorkle led Cal's women in the event at 4:59.53. Junior
Iyan Godwin ended the Bears' day at that meet with a 1:57.06 in the 800m.
