LAFAYETTE, La. – Randi Roelling went 5.1 innings in the circle and allowed just one run with four strikeouts to lead the California softball team to a 3-1 eight-inning victory over No. 21 Louisiana on Sunday at Lamson Park.
Acacia Anders went 2-for-3 and was responsible for the game-winning RBI, while
Kaylee Pond and
Hope Alley recorded two hits apiece for the Bears. Â
Cal faced Ragin' Cajun ace Sam Landry for the second time in three days, and after not getting a hit off of Landry on Friday, the Bears got an Anders single to quickly put their first one on the board to lead off the second.
After breaking through in the hit column against the Cajuns in the second inning, Cal also broke through on the scoreboard in the third. Alley singled to start the frame and reached third after an Anzaldo single and a groundout, before scoring when
Lagi Quiroga laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Louisiana drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the third and Cal went to the bullpen, replacing starting pitcher
Anna Reimers with Roelling. After giving up a single to put runners on the corners, Roelling got a big strikeout to end the frame as the Bears held on to the 1-0 lead.
Leading 1-0 into the last of the seventh, a hard rain started to fall with a Cajun runner on second and two straight wild pitches allowed Louisiana to tie the game, 1-1.
The Bears would rally back right away, however, re-taking the lead on a perfect squeeze bunt from Anders to score
Mika Lee who got on after getting hit by a pitch. Cal added another when
Elon Butler singled and a Cajun fielding error allowed Anders to score from first. Â
