Mitchell Named MPSF Freshman Of The Week
Three Different Cal Rookies Have Earned Conference Honors This Year
The MPSF announced Tuesday that California men's gymnast
Jaxon Mitchell was named MPSF Freshman of the Week for his outing last Sunday against William & Mary. Mitchell is Cal's third rookie to earn the honor this season, following classmates
Carter Kim (Jan. 16) and
Brendan Strom (Feb. 13); this is the first time in program history that three freshmen have won weekly recognition.
Mitchell, who acted as the Golden Bears' leadoff man on both rings and horizontal bar, improved his personal best by over a point to 13.600 in a standout rings routine. His efforts helped Cal take home the title on both events, with Mitchell also earning the individual crown on the former for the first time as a collegian. This is the first career weekly award for the Kyle, Texas, native.
"That was a huge performance by Jaxon - he showed great strength," associate head coach
Bryan Del Castillo said. "He trains smart and is proving to be a solid competitor for our team."
Mitchell and the Bears will return to action at Haas Pavilion on Sunday, March 3, when they will host Nebraska, Air Force and Stanford for Senior Day at noon PT.
