Jack Alexy, Geoffrey Vavitsas Take Home Honors

Junior swimmer Jack Alexy and freshman diver Geoffrey Vavitsas were named the Pac-12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday. It is the first weekly conference award earned by both athletes.

Alexy, the native of Mendham, New Jersey, won all four events he competed in, helping the Golden Bears defeat host USC last Friday in Los Angeles. In his two individual event wins in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, he edged out teammate Bjorn Seeliger with times of 19.30 and 41.94.

In the 400 medley relay, Alexy anchored Cal's victorious A lineup with a freestyle split of 41.94 – the fastest free split of the meet. He finished the dual against the Trojans by leading off Cal's winning 200 free relay squad, and his time of 19.10 was the second fastest split of the event.

Vavitsas placed second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dive against USC. His 1-meter score of 321.80 was a season-best mark and fifth-best score in the 1-meter drive in program history. The Toronto native later scored 317.40 on the 3-meter dive.

Vavitsas' honor marks the the second weekly award for Cal divers, as Joshua Thai was named Pac-12 Diver of the Week on Jan. 23.

Cal returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 24 when it travels across the bay to take on rival Stanford at Avery Aquatic Center.
