Cal Travels To Top-Ranked Oklahoma
Bears’ First True Road Trip Will Be Major Test
This weekend, California men's gymnastics will travel out of the Bay Area for the first time in 2024, taking on Oklahoma on Saturday at the Sooners' McCasland Field House. The first rotation is scheduled to start at noon PT.
After keeping some of their top performers limited last week against Stanford, the Golden Bears will be back to nearly full strength this weekend. Senior
Noah Newfeld and sophomore
Theodor Roald Gadderud will each be competing in five events, while standout graduate senior
Darren Wong is slated to appear in four. Saturday will also mark graduate senior
Yu-Chen Lee's return to competition as he makes his season debut on vault. Finally, Cal's No. 5 pommel horse lineup will feature all five of its best scorers – Newfeld, Roald Gadderud, Wong, graduate senior
Noah Sano and freshman
Brendan Strom.
Oklahoma ranks among the nation's top-five squads in all six events, with No. 1 rankings on floor and pommel horse. They are led by redshirt sophomore Fuzzy Benas, who has recorded the nation's top all-around score this season (85.200), and junior Emre Dodanli, who averages an NCAA-leading 14.750 on floor.
Last week, Cal took No. 1 Stanford down to the wire, finishing just a point behind at 391.850-392.850. The Bears recorded event wins on vault and parallel bars, with the former punctuated by standout performances from junior
Jasper Smith-Gordon (14.700) and sophomore
Khalen Curry (14.650).
