Cal Looks To Keep Strong Start Going

BERKELEY – The California baseball team plays its first true road games this weekend when the Golden Bears travel to Eugene for a three-game series against Oregon.
 
The Bears (11-3, 3-0 Pac-12) are coming off a three-game series sweep over UCLA that culminated with a thrilling walk-off home run by Caleb Lomavita on Sunday. Cal has won four straight and is looking to go 4-0 in Pac-12 play for the first time since 2013.
 
Oregon (11-5, 2-1) is coming off a 15-5 loss at home to the Portland Pilots. Last weekend, the Ducks took a series from Arizona State in Tempe.

  • The Bears went 4-0 on their recent homestand, with wins over Stanford and a three-game sweep over UCLA. The Bears' four-game winning streak is their second longest of the season.
  • With a win Friday, Cal will begin Pac-12 play 4-0 for the first time since 2013. 
  • As a team, Cal is hitting .296, which is fourth in the conference. Three Bears are hitting north of .350 with freshman PJ Moutzouridis leading the squad with a .467 average. Moutzouridis ranks 20th in the nation in average and is second among all freshmen with at least three plate appearances per game.
  • Cal will play its first true road game on Friday. The Bears have played five neutral site games this season, beginning with the MLB Desert Invitational to open the year. Cal will play just 17 road contests in 2024.
  • In Sunday's win over the Bruins, Caleb Lomavita hit his sixth home run of the season and 29th of his career. The six home runs is second in the Pac-12. His next home run will tie him for 10th all-time in program history with Connor Jackson.
  • Cal has clubbed 25 home runs (37th nationally) and averages 1.79 home runs per contest (27th nationally).
  • The Bears improved to 6-1 in night games with their 11-7 win over the Bruins on Friday. Cal's pitching staff has dominated in night games, boasting a staff ERA of 2.76.
 
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday will be the 71st meeting between the Bears and Ducks, with Oregon owning a 38=32 advantage in a series that dates back to 1963. Since Oregon reinstated baseball in 2009, the Ducks own a 25-18 edge in the series and are 10-7 with Mike Neu as Cal's head coach. Oregon won three of four against the Bears last season, including the first round matchup at the Pac-12 Championships, winning 5-4 in Scottsdale.
 
UP NEXT
Cal remains on the road but will be back in the Bay Area, making the trip across the Bay Bridge to take on San Francisco at Benedetti Diamond. Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
