BERKELEY – Acacia Anders hit a 2-run home run in the sixth inning and the No. 19 California softball team hung on in the seventh inning for an 8-7 victory over No. 21 Arizona to secure the series on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field.
Anders,
Tatum Anzaldo and
Lagi Quiroga recorded two hits apiece for the Golden Bears (24-8, 3-6 Pac-12). Allie Skaggs had three RBI to pace the Wildcats (21-9-1, 4-5 Pac-12).
The Bears' series win against the Wildcats was their third straight, just the second time in program history Cal has taken three series in a row against Arizona (2011-13).
In a series that turned out to feature 42 combined runs in the three games, the two offenses both got off to a hot start again on Sunday. Skaggs hit a 3-run homer in the first inning to put Arizona on top, but Cal battled right back in the home half, all with two outs.
Kaylee Pond hit a solo home run to put the Bears on the board and a
Tianna Bell double,
Elon Butler walk and Quiroga single loaded the bases for
Alyssa Herrera. The freshman came through, scoring two with a single to left to tie the game.
The game was knotted 3-3 until the fourth when a solo home run gave Arizona the lead again, but as they have done multiple times throughout the season, Cal had a response in the answer inning. Quiroga hit a solo blast of her own to start the frame and Anzaldo put the Bears in front with an RBI double to left center.
Leading 6-4 in the sixth, Anders' fifth home run of the year, a 2-run bomb into the trees in right field gave Cal insurance it would eventually need. The Wildcats loaded the bases with nobody out to start the seventh inning before an RBI single and walk made the score 8-6.
Haylei Archer took over in the circle with the bases still full of Wildcats. After giving up an RBI groundout, the senior got a groundout to first and a game-ending groundout to second base to earn her first save of the season after throwing 145 pitches in Saturday's win.
