No. 20 Cal Walks Off No. 8 Washington

Bears Take Sunday Series Finale From Huskies

BERKELEY – Tianna Bell drove in Tatum Anzaldo in the bottom of the seventh inning as the No. 20 California softball team earned a walk-off win over No. 8 Washington in the series finale on Sunday at Levine-Fricke Field.

Bell went 3-for-4 with her 10th home run of the season and Anzaldo doubled twice for the Golden Bears (31-14, 5-11 Pac-12). Brooke Nelson homered for the Huskies (30-8, 12-6 Pac-12).

Washington got on the scoreboard first for the first time of the series in the opening frame when Nelson hit a solo shot off of Cal starter Haylei Archer. Bell answered right back in the home half when she went deep to the opposite field, making the score 1-1.

Archer, making her fourth appearance of the week, got it going in the middle innings against the potent Huskies lineup, putting zeroes on the board in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Trailing 2-1, Anzaldo and Acacia Anders gave the Bears their first lead of the day in the third.

Anzaldo doubled to bring home Holly Medina and Anders hit a sacrifice fly to plate the senior from Whittier as Cal took a 3-2 lead into the sixth. Washington was able to manufacture a run in the sixth, but Archer escaped the jam on her 250th pitch of the series to strand the potential go-ahead run at third base and set the plate for a walk-off win.

Washington ace Ruby Meylan retired the first two batters in the inning, but Anzaldo's second double, followed by Bell's laced single to right brought Anzaldo around for the game-winning run and Cal's sixth win over a ranked team this season.
