Golden Bears Earn Awards At Academic Luncheon
Annual Gathering Acknowledges Accomplishments Across Athletic Department
Cal's Athletic Study Center hosted its annual Academic Honors Luncheon on Tuesday at the Field Club At California Memorial Stadium, honoring a variety of accomplishments by an impressive cross-section of Cal student-athletes.
The prestigious Tom Hansen Medals were won by a pair of water polo student-athletes - Isabel Williams of the women's water polo team and Nikolaos Papanikolaou of the men's water polo squad. The Hansen Medal is awarded annually to the top male and female outgoing student-athlete at each Pac-12 institution.
Williams is a two-time All-American and three-time All-MPSF selection who last weekend became the program's all-time saves leader. She also is a multiple honoree on the MPSF All-Academic Team and Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll.
Papanikolaou is a three-time National Player of the Year who also led the Bears to three straight NCAA championships. He also has made multiple appearances on the MPSF All-Academic Team and Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll.
Elise Byun of Cal's women's gymnastics team served as the luncheon's guest student-athlete speaker and also won the Walter A. Haas Jr. Community Service Award, along with Myles Williams of the Golden Bears football team. Cal alum Jennifer Maxwell, co-founder of PowerBar and founder of Jambar, was the keynote speaker.
