East Bay Rivals Play Midweek Series

BERKELEY – The California baseball team begins a busy stretch of five games in six days when it plays a pair of midweek contests against Easy Bay rival Saint Mary's. The Golden Bears will host the Gaels on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. PT. Tuesday's game will be televised on Pac-12 Bay Area with Joe Castellano calling the action live. On Wednesday, Cal will travel through the Caldicott Tunnel to play the Gaels at Louis Guisto Field; that game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start and will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
The Golden Bears (16-13) are coming off a sweep at the hands of visiting Arizona. It is just the second time this season Cal has lost a home series. The Bears are 12-5 overall at home this year and 6-0 in midweek games at Stu Gordon Stadium.  
 
Saint Mary's (18-11) is coming off a series win at home against Grand Canyon. The Gaels are 11-5 at home this season and 7-6 on the road.

  • Cal wraps up a five-game homestand on Tuesday when Saint Mary's comes to Stu Gordon Stadium.
  • Cal is currently mired in a three-game losing streak – the second such streak this season. Overall, the Bears are 16-13 but are 3-7 over their last 10 contests.
  • Cal was swept at home over the weekend at the hands of Arizona. It is the second time this season the Bears have been swept (at Arizona State March 28-30) and second home series loss (against Utah March 22-24).

  • The Bears are hitting .287 as a team, which is third in the Pac-12. PJ Moutzouridis is hitting .371, which is also third in the Pac-12. Cal is averaging 6.7 runs per game, which is sixth in the Pac-12. Cal's pitching staff boasts an ERA of 5.07, which is 84th in the nation.
  • Freshman Ryan Tayman hit Cal's 44th home run of the year Sunday. The Bears are second in the Pac-12 in both home runs and home runs per game (1.52). Six players have hit four or more home runs this season, led by Caleb Lomavita's 11.
  • After going 1-for-5 with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jarren Advincula extended his hitting streak to 19 games. The program record for consecutive games with a hit is 27 set by Josh Satin between May 20, 2007-March 29, 2008.
 
SERIES HISTORY
 
  • Tuesday will be the 191st all-time meeting between the Bears and Gaels. Cal owns a 128-62 advantage in the series. Last season, Cal defeated the Gaels 9-3 at Louis Guisto Field on April 11, 2023. In that contest, Rodney Green Jr. went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six runs driven in.
 
UP NEXT
Cal will stay on the road for three games when it travels to Pullman, Washington, to take on the Cougars starting Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field. Friday's game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start and will be televised on Pac-12 Washington.
