Cal Qualifies For NCAA Championships
Bears Will Compete In Session I Of Team Qualifier
California men's gymnastics will compete in the NCAA Championships for the 25th consecutive year, as the NCAA announced its 2024 Team Qualifier sessions Tuesday.
The Golden Bears will travel to Columbus, Ohio, and compete in Session I of the NCAA Team Qualifier, starting at 10 a.m. PT on April 19. Cal is the No. 8 seed, along with No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 Illinois, No. 5 Nebraska, No. 9 Navy and No. 12 Greenville.
A top-three finish in their session will qualify the Bears for the Championships Final on April 20. If not selected, Cal can still send individuals for the Final; those athletes must score in the top-three of all gymnasts who are not already advancing with their teams on each event.
Cal has won four NCAA team titles to date, with the most recent coming in 1998. The Bears' last individual champion was Glen Ishino, who scored a 15.600 (old scoring system) on pommel horse for the 2012 title. The last time they advanced as a team to the Final was in 2015, when they finished fifth overall.
Cal sent seven individuals to the 2023 Final; the squad's highest finisher was
Tyler Shimizu, who placed 12th in the all-around with a score of 79.398.
The Bears are averaging a team score of 399.388 on the season, with three scores above 400. Two of those came in their last two competitions, with Cal recording its best overall score since 2017 (405.600) at the MPSF Championships last weekend. Senior
Aidan Li's 14.700 on pommel horse, itself a modern program record, anchored a lineup that scored a total of 69.000 for the top score in modern Cal history.
