Cal Earns Pair Of National Recognitions

Lauzon, Coaching Staff Honored By College Gym News

BERKELEY – California women's gymnast Mya Lauzon and the Golden Bears' coaching were honored at the national level Wednesday following a 2024 season that saw them finish as NCAA runner-up in April.

Lauzon was named Breakout Performer of the Year and the Golden Bears' leaders – co-head coaches Liz Crandall-Howell and Justin Howell and assistant coaches John Carney and Nevaeh DeSouza – were named Coaching Staff of the Year by College Gym News.

Lauzon was not short of accolades this season, taking home six total All-America honors and four All-Pac-12 honors. At the NCAA Championship, the junior won bronze on balance beam, placed fourth in the all-around, and became the first Bear to record a perfect 10 in the postseason, doing so on vault. Lauzon finished the regular season as the sixth-ranked all-arounder in the country as well as fifth on vault and the uneven bars.

Cal's coaching staff led the Bears to their first outright Pac-12 championship this season with a perfect 7-0 record. After rewriting the record book last season, the quad found a way to top that performance in 2024 with its highest final national qualifying score (NQS) in program history at 198.180. In addition to the runner-up finish in the National Championship final, the Bears recorded their three highest team scores in program history this year.

Crandall-Howell and Howell were previously named WCGA West Region Coaches of the Year and Pac-12 Coaches of the Year, while Carney took home WCGA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
