Golden Bear Programs Post High APR Marks

6 Teams Register Perfect Scores Of 1,000; 9 Others Come In At 990 Or Better

BERKELEY - California student-athletes posted another year of strong results in the latest Academic Progress Rate data that was released by the NCAA on Tuesday.

Six Golden Bear programs registered perfect multi-year marks of 1,000 while another nine teams tallied scores of 900 or better. Cal also tied for its third-best overall single-year (2022-23) mark ever at 989.

"This year's set of APR scores demonstrates the terrific work our student-athletes continue to do in the classroom at the No. 1 public university in the country," Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "Their commitment to their studies – in conjunction with the support of our Athletic Study Center and so many others in our Cal family – is truly an inspiration. I continue to be so proud to watch our Golden Bears excel in the classroom, in the community and in competition."

Cal's programs that scored a perfect mark of 1,000 are field hockey, men's gymnastics, men's water polo, women's basketball, women's golf and women's gymnastics. The Bears' women's basketball team was the only one in the Pac-12 with a perfect score. The women's golf program was perfect for the eighth consecutive year.

Men's basketball (990), men's cross country (991), softball (991), lacrosse (996), women's rowing (991), women's soccer (995), women's tennis (992), volleyball (95) and women's water polo (994) all reached a mark of 990 or better.

Cal's football program recorded a score of 976, its third highest ever. The national average for football this year is 963 while it is 968 for men's basketball and 981 for women's basketball.

The APR was created to be more of a real-time measurement of academic success than graduation rates. It is as team-based metric in which scholarship student-athletes earn one point for each team for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.
