Tyler Shimizu, Noah Newfeld Honored

BERKELEY – California men's gymnastics' Tyler Shimizu and Noah Newfeld were named At-Large Academic All-Americans for the first time in their respective careers by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Wednesday.

Shimizu, a rising senior for the Bears, earned second-team honors, while Newfeld, a 2024 graduate, landed on the third team. The full first, second and third teams can be viewed on academicallamerica.com.

Shimizu was an All-MPSF performer on floor in the 2024 season, ranking 17th in the nation on that particular event, and reached the NCAA Finals in the all-around for the second-consecutive year. He previously reached the NCAA Finals on pommel horse (2022) and has competed at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships (2023). An electrical engineering and computer science major, Shimizu is a two-time College Gymnastics Association (CGA) All-America Scholar Athlete, as well as a two-time MPSF All-Academic and Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll member.

Newfeld reached the 2024 NCAA All-Around Finals and finished the year ranked 12th in the nation on parallel bars and 22nd on pommel horse. He was a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award, which is presented each year to the nation's finest senior collegiate gymnast. Newfeld's career at Cal ended with him tied for third in modern program history on rings, fifth on parallel bars and seventh on pommel horse. He appeared at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in both 2022 and 2024, competed in three-straight Winter Cups (2022-24), was a 2023 CGA Regular-Season All-American (All-Around) and the 2021 CGA Rookie of the Year. Newfeld, who graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science this past spring, is a three-time CGA All-America Scholar Athlete, a four-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll member and three-time MPSF All-Academic.
