Curry Wins Olympic Silver With U.S. Relay

PARIS – Brooks Curry, a member of Cal's postgraduate training group in men's swimming, helped the United States capture a silver medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay Tuesday at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Curry swam the second leg in the morning heats as the Americans posted a time of 7:00.57 to win heat one and advance to the nighttime final. The United States – with Curry not in the relay for the final – finished second in a time of 7:00.78 behind gold medalist Great Britain (6:59.43).
Cal alumnus Jeremy Bagshaw swam the third leg of heat two for Canada's quartet, which did not qualify for the final with its seventh-place time of 7:12.07.
This marks the second Olympic medal for Curry, who won gold with the United States' 4x100 freestyle relay at the Tokyo Olympics.
Three current Golden Bears were in the mix in the 100 freestyle Tuesday at the Paris La Defense Arena, with Jack Alexy (USA) swimming the seventh-fastest time (47.68) in the semifinals to punch his ticket to Wednesday's final. Earlier Tuesday, Alexy won heat eight in a time of 47.57, while Nikolas Antoniou (Cyprus) won heat four in a time of 50.35 and Björn Seeliger (Sweden) swam a 49.70 to finish seventh in heat six. Neither Antoniou nor Seeliger reached the semis.
Women's Rowing
Cal alumna Inger Kavlie and teammate Thea Helseth (Norway) advanced to Thursday's double sculls A final after finishing third in their semifinal with a time of 6:52.47. Meanwhile former Bear and U.S. rower Kara Kohler finished second in her single sculls quarterfinal with a time of 7:34.96 to reach the A/B semifinal Thursday.
Men's Rowing
Martin Mackovic and Nikolaj Pimenov (Serbia) posted a time of 6:17.35 to place fourth in their double sculls semifinal, with the duo moving on to the B final Thursday. Current Bear Tim Roth and the Switzerland four finished fifth with a time of 6:00.29 in its repechage to qualify for Wednesday's B final.
Badminton
In the first Olympic women's badminton match to feature two pairs of sisters, Cal alums Kerry Xu and Annie Xu (USA) fell to Bulgaria's Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva 2-1 (18-21, 12-21) in women's Group B doubles action. The Xu twins finished 0-3 in group play and did not reach the quarterfinals.
Playing in the so-called "Group of Death" in men's doubles, Joshua Yuan and partner Vinson Chiu (USA) faced defending Olympic gold medalists Wang Chi-Lin and Lee Yang in Group D and lost to the Chinese Taipei duo 2-0 (12-21, 13-21). With the Americans finishing 0-4 in the group, they did not advance to the quarterfinals.
Men's Water Polo
For the second straight game, Adrian Weinberg was the United States' wire-to-wire choice at goalkeeper and he didn't disappoint, racking up 14 saves in the Americans' 14-8 victory over Romania. Weinberg had at least three saves in each period, holding Romania to one goal between the second and third periods as the U.S. took control of the game with a decisive 8-1 run. Johnny Hooper added two goals and an assist while spending a team-high 25:03 minutes in the pool, and fellow Cal alum Luca Cupido played 22:56 minutes for the winning side.
Nikolaos Papanikolaou saw just under 13 minutes of action for Greece, which got out to a 2-0 start to the group stage by holding off Montenegro in a 17-16 penalty-shootout win.
The United States next plays Greece in Group A action Thursday.
