Former Bears Duo Earn Silver For Canada
PARIS – Former members of the California women's rowing team, Caileigh Filmer '17 and Sydney Payne '19, both came away with the silver medal for Canada as part of the women's eight Saturday morning. This was Filmer's third Olympics and second medal as she won a bronze in the women's pair at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. For Payne, this was her second Olympics and second medal as she won the gold in the women's eight at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Canada got out to a great start, sitting in second place just a couple seats behind Romania in the opening couple hundred meters before pulling even as the boats passed the 500-meter mark with Great Britain trailing just one seat behind. The Romanians pushed ahead and took a three-seat lead over the Canadians and British boats at the halfway point. With 500 meters remaining in the race, Romania extended its lead to almost a full boat with Canada and Great Britain battling it out for second place. The Canadians and British boats pulled nearly even with each other over the last 500 meters before Canada found an extra gear and edged out Great Britain for second place in a time of 5:58.84.
This marks the fifth all-time Olympic medal in the women's eight for Canada which now have 15 medals (4 gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze) in these Olympic Games.
