Former Bear Wins Bronze For Great Britain
PARIS – Former California women's rower Rowan McKellar '17 collected her first-ever Olympic medal after helping Great Britain win the bronze in the women's eight Saturday morning. The British earned a berth straight into the A final after winning its heat on Monday.
Great Britain got out with the lead pack, joining Romania and Canada in the opening couple hundred meters. As the boats passed the 500-meter mark, Romania took the lead and Great Britain was just one seat behind Canada. At the halfway point, the British and Canadian boats were going head-to-head for second place with the United States making a push as the Romanians continued to grow their lead. Heading into the final 500 meters of the race, the British were just two seats behind Canada and holding off the Americans, who were just three seats behind in fourth place. Great Britain was able to pull nearly even with Canada but couldn't move through and finished in third place in a time of 5:59.51.
This marks just the second-ever medal in the women's eight for Great Britain, which took silver in the event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. This medal brings the count to 32 (10 gold, 10 silver, 12 bronze) for the British in the Paris Olympic Games.
