Cal Junior Rand Santos Selected To U.S. National Team Match Day 23 For First Time

TOKYO – California rugby junior Rand Santos has been selected to the U.S. National Team match day 23 for its contest against Team Fiji on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Japan. Golden Bear alum and Eagles veteran Jack Iscaro has also been named a starter for the match, which will mark his 10th cap as a USA Eagle.

The contest is Team USA's third match of the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup. The Eagles claimed 28-15 victory over Team Canada in the first match of pool play before falling to Team Japan 41-24. Team USA has put together a 1-3 record in 2024 15-a-side action. Saturday's semifinal matchup with Fiji will be the first round of the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 3:05 a.m. PT and fans can watch the match live on Peacock.

Santos looks to make his U.S. National Team debut after being invited to training camp with the Eagles this summer. He has previously played with the U.S. junior side, most recently at the 2024 U20 World Rugby Trophy tournament in Edinburgh, Scotland, along with fellow current Bears Solomon Williams, Max Threlkeld, Miles Malone and Cade Crist. Santos got first-15 nods in three matches, twice as the flyhalf and once as the fullback.

Santos has been a starting player for the Bears in his first two seasons in Berkeley, earning a place in Cal's starting lineup in his debut season in 2023. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound back has made 25 starts over the last two years, including Cal's appearance in the 2023 national title match. Santos is a versatile back that has featured as a center, fullback and flyhalf for the Bears. He has logged 13 tries and seven successful conversion attempts in 15-a-side action in his collegiate career.

Iscaro has been an important player for the USA Eagles since he made his debut on Nov. 6, 2022. He plays at the No. 1 prop position and has been capped nine times over the last two years.

Iscaro graduated from Cal in 2019 having been a part of a squad that won back-to-back national Varsity Cup XVs championships in 2016 and 2017, and he made D1A finals appearances in 2018 and 2019. His numerous starting lineup features for the Bears earned him All-America honors in his senior year. Iscaro currently plays for Major League Rugby Team, Old Glory D.C.

"We wish the team and our boys the best of success," Cal head coach Jack Clark said.
