No. 5 Cal Starts Strong In Davis

Arlett, Casabella Lead Bears To Pair Of Wins

DAVIS – The No. 5 California men's water polo team opened the Aggie Roundup with a pair of ranked wins Saturday, defeating No. 8 UC Davis 16-7 and No. 12 San Jose State 10-8.

Maddox Arlett led the Golden Bears (5-1) with five goals in the day, all of which came in the win over the Aggies (4-3). The freshman got Cal out to a fast start with a first-quarter hat trick, eventually extending the lead to 7-1  early in the second quarter.

Max Casabella capped a 7-0 run early in the third quarter, putting the Bears up 10-1 with his lone goal of the game. Fellow ACWPC All-American Roberto Valera finished with three goals, an assist and two earned exclusions.

The Bears' second game of the day would go down to the final minutes. Trailing 8-7 in the fourth, Casabella tied things up with his second goal off an assist by Bende Pardi with 3:08 to go. A minute and a half later, Casabella scored for a third time to put the Bears ahead 9-8. Pardi iced things on the following possession, securing his first hat trick of the season.

Goalkeeper Riley Clansen finished with 10 saves against the Spartans.

Cal returns to the pool tomorrow for games against American River at 11 a.m. PT and West Valley at 12:30 p.m.
