SAN FRANCISCO – California men's tennis senior Carl Emil Overbeck completed a trifecta of titles as the 2024 Battle in the Bay Classic came to an end Sunday at the California Tennis Club, with the Dane capturing the doubles crown with Theo Dean in the morning and then winning the singles championship in the afternoon. The singles title earned Overbeck wild-card entry into the singles main draw of the Tiburon Challenger professional tournament, slated for Sept. 29-Oct. 6.
 
On Saturday night, Overbeck won a wild-card shootout at the California Tennis Club that earned him wild-card entry into the singles draw of the Fairfield Challenger in October.
 
Sunday's doubles trophy marked Overbeck's third at the annual tournament, at which he won the 2021 and 2022 doubles titles with former teammate Yuta Kikuchi.
 
In the doubles final, the fourth-seeded and 25th-ranked Dean and Overbeck defeated the duo of TCU's Duncan Chan and Michigan State's Danial Rakhmatullayev 8-6.
 
Overbeck – seeded fifth and ranked 56th in singles – battled TCU's fourth-seeded and 39th-ranked Lui Maxted in the singles final, with the Copenhagen, Denmark, native prevailing 7-6(8), 6-4.
 
"It was a spectacular event for the Bears family, with most of the guys winning their first matches, three guys getting to the singles quarterfinals and Carlo winning the triple crown," said Kris Kwinta, Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's tennis. "Actually, he won four times if you count the pro-am on Tuesday. If you as a coach can write a script for how a tournament would go, that would be as perfect of a script that you could write. I'm really happy with the whole team and how they supported each other and supported Carlo and Theo on the last day.
 
"It was an insane performance by Carlo. There was more pressure once he beat the No. 1 player in the country (Michigan State's top-ranked Ozan Baris) in the quarterfinals. There were more expectations. But he held his nerves, played his best tennis and was able to be clutch in the big moments. It was very cool to see from my perspective and I think for him as well, to see how much he's grown and know that he's at a different level now.
 
"Theo Dean had a great doubles tournament and in singles as well. This was the first time he played with Carlo, and this is one of the premier collegiate events in the fall. Great to see them clicking together, and great to see all the guys gain valuable wins in the main draw, back draw and extra matches. Altogether I'm super excited for the team. It was a great performance."
 
Overbeck's strong performances in the first week of the season could be a sign of things to come in his final collegiate season.
 
"It started with having a really good spring," he said of his early success. "I've gotten very close with Kris on court, and I've improved on a lot of things he's had me work on. And then being home over the summer with my coaches back there really helped me. And I traveled a bit with my girlfriend and played some tournaments together. That gave me a lot of confidence as well."
 
The Bears next compete in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup from Friday through next Sunday at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks followed by the ITA All-American Championships from Sept. 21-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
