Bears Play First ACC Game, Match Up With Florida State For First Time



 
POSTGAME NOTES - CAL AT FLORIDA STATE (9.21.2024)
 
  • Today's matchup was Cal's first-ever ACC game and first contest against Florida State. Cal began playing football in 1886 and was a member of the Pac-12 - previously known as the PCC, AAWU, Pac-8 and Pac-10 - every season since 1915.
  • Cal played in Florida for the first time since knocking off Clemson in the 1991 Citrus Bowl in Orlando on Jan. 1, 1992, while its last regular-season game in the Sunshine State was at Miami on Sept. 16, 1989.
  • Cal did not allow a point in the third quarter for the fourth straight contest and is now outscoring its 2024 opponents in the third quarter, 31-0.
  • Cal trailed in tonight's contest both at the end of the first quarter (7-0) and halftime (7-6) to mark the first time Cal has trailed at the end of any quarter this season.
  • QB Fernando Mendoza registered a career-high 303 yards passing
  • TE Corey Dyches ran his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 30 in a row. Dyches' first reception of tonight's game for 28 yards was the longest of his Cal career.
  • WR Mikey Matthews' 46-yard reception was the longest of his career and Cal's longest pass play of the season.
  • WR Mason Starling had career highs of five receptions and 68 yards receiving.
  • Cal had nine different players with receptions for the third consecutive game with six wide receivers (Mavin Anderson, Jonathan Brady, Trond Grizzell, Nyziah Hunter, Josiah Martin, Mikey Matthews, Mason Starling), two tight ends (Corey Dyches, Jack Endries) and one running back (Jaydn Ot).
  • DB MIles Williams had a career-high eight tackles and the second interception of his career
  • WR Nyziah Hunter, WR Mikey Matthews and OL Will McDonald made their first starts at Cal with Hunter's start also the first of his collegiate career. OL Sioape Vatikani made his first start of the season. ILB Liam Johnson made his first appearance at Cal.
