LEADING THE CHARGE
The Bears will play for the first time under Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Michael Wilson, who was hired to the position on July 22. Wilson, a 2007 alumnus and key member of Cal's 2004 NCAA Men's Golf Championship team, returned to Berkeley most recently following two successful seasons at the helm of Colorado State's program (2022-24), having led the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances and a 2023 NCAA Championship berth. He's entering his eighth season as a Division I head coach.

LINEUP GLANCE
Returnees Charlie Berridge, Daniel Heo and Kuangyu (Tony) Chen are in the season-opening lineup for Cal, along with a pair of newcomers in graduate transfer Wenliang Xie and freshman Matthew Miyamoto. Berridge, a senior, averaged 73.00 strokes per round across six events last season and twice finished inside the top 25. Heo enters his junior year with a 72.96 career stroke average, having also played in six events last season. Chen is Cal's most experienced returnee, having played 12 of his 25 career stroke-play events as a redshirt junior last season. He started the season in scorching fashion, placing inside the top 15 individually in all four fall events, including a win at the Cal Poly Invitational.

Xie is a former two-time All-Big East Conference selection at Seton Hall and has played in more than 40 tournaments since the start of his collegiate career in 2019-20. Miyamoto, a Sacramento native, is one of four freshmen on Cal's roster.

NEW ERA TEED UP FOR CAL GOLF
A transformational gift in support of Cal Golf is setting a new course for the sport and providing a model for philanthropic engagement at a pivotal moment for Cal Athletics. The $23 million gift — the largest endowment gift in Cal Athletics history — provided by an anonymous donor and established campus friend, will fully endow the men's and women's teams and provide Golden Bear golfers with a world class training facility at the Stonebrae Country Club. Read more about the gift at inspire.berkeley.edu.

FALL SEASON UNDERWAY
The Tindall is the first of five events Cal will play in this fall. Along with stroke-play competitions at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 7-8), Pacific Invitational (Oct. 14-16) and Cal Poly Invitational (Oct. 28-30), the Bears will team up with the Cal women's golf team to face Stanford in the annual Big Match next Thursday at Menlo Country Club. Cal is the reigning tournament champion at both the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and the Cal Poly Invitational.
