Bears Notch First Road Win Of The Season

Cal Tops James Madison, 3-0

HARRISONBURG, Va – The California field hockey team secured its first win on the road this season against James Madison, 3-0, on Sunday at JMU Field Hockey Complex in Harrisonburg, Va.

"We are happy to split the weekend against two very strong teams," Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead said. "We understand the standard now and our training effort going forward will reflect that. Thank you to the alumni for the good wishes. I am happy people are drawn to watch us."

Sophomore Holly Pears claimed the first goal of the match late in the opening period to set the tone for the Golden Bears. It was the third goal for Pears of the season, the second-most on the team.

It was a tightly contested matchup throughout the first three periods until Freshman Liz Klompmaker used a penalty corner to drain her first goal of the day midway through the fourth period off assists from graduate student Canisha van Duyn and senior Sydney Decher. van Duyn tallied her team-leading seventh assist on the play.

Later in the period, Klompmaker put the finishing touches on the game after scoring her second goal of the day and ninth of the season in the final minute of action. Klompmaker leads the ACC in total goals this season.

Cal returns to action on Sunday against in-state rival UC Davis in Davis, Calif., at 1:00 p.m. PT.
