THOUSAND OAKS – The California men's golf team found itself in the thick of a talented 14-team field after 18 holes played Monday at the Southwestern Invitational. The Golden Bears shot a spring-opening, 9-over-par 293 at Sherwood Country Club and are tied for eighth with 36 holes remaining.
 
Three Bears finished round one among the top 30, led by Kuangyu (Tony) Chen and Ziqin (Eric) Zhou, who are tied for 23rd at 1-over-par. Both were even par through 17 holes before carding bogeys on No. 18. Charlie Berridge is close behind in a tie for 29th at 2-over-par; the senior overcame a tough first nine holes with a 3-under-par back nine, tallying birdies on holes 10, 11, 14 and 18.
