Bears Win 8 Events On Second Day

LA JOLLA – The No. 4 men's swimming & diving team concluded the Triton Invitational Saturday after a dominant showing on the second day of the meet, finishing on top of the standings with 1476 points at Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla.  
 
The Golden Bears won eight of the nine events on the second day, while at least two swimmers and two relay teams placed among the top eight in each event.
 
Cal started the day with swimmers taking the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley, led by freshman Ryan Erisman in a personal-best time of 3:44.88. Sophomore Freddy Klein (3:52.73) and freshman Norvy Clontz (3:56.44) followed behind to finish second and third, respectively.
 
The Bears continued to show their depth in the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke after filling the top three spots in each event. Freshman Casper Puggaard (46.65) won the 100 fly, while freshman Kenny Barnicle (1:37.07) touched first in the 200 free and Sophomore Yamato Okadome (51.79) claimed the 100 breast.
 
Junior Humberto Najera closed the morning session with a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:42.15, ahead of Puggaard, who took second after clocking a 1:44.94.
 
Klein (15:17.06) and freshman Julien Rousseau (15:29.02) handled business in the 1650-yard freestyle after touching first and second, respectively. Sophomore Nans Mazellier secured the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 42.84.
 
Sophomore Zachary Tan was the lone swimmer in the 200-yard breaststroke to swim under the two-minute mark after clocking a 1:57.36.
 
Cal concluded the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay after the A-group of Mazellier, sophomore Lucca Battaglini, fifth-year Evan Petty and junior Samuel Quarles clocked a 1:19.03.
