Bears Best Miami 2-0

Cal Earns 8th Shutout

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The California women's soccer team earned its second straight win Thursday night defeating Miami on the road 2-0 at Cobb Stadium in the first meeting between the two teams. Senior Lumi Kostmayer recorded a goal and an assist and senior Coco Thistle assisted on both goals.

The Golden Bears (8-2-7, 4-1-3 ACC) and senior goalkeeper Teagan Wy earned their ACC-best eighth shutout of the season to move into third place in the conference standings. Wy tallied five saves giving her 73 on the season which is good for second in the ACC.

Cal got on the board quickly with Kostmayer scoring her team-leading sixth goal of the year in the 10th minute of the match. Freshman Elhom Khursand played a ball to Thistle who sent it into the 18-yard box for Kostmayer. It took the senior striker just one perfect touch to corral the ball, turn and fire it into the net to give the Bears the early lead.

The Bears doubled their lead early in the second half with Kostmayer and Thistle striking again. Kostmayer played crafty ball over to Thistle who once again put her teammate in the perfect position to score. This time it was 5th year Mia Fontana on the receiving end and the Cal forward rolled her second goal of the season past the Hurricanes' keeper.

For just the second time this season the Bears won match in which they were outshot. Miami won the shot battle 15-11 but Cal placed six on frame to the host's five.

The Bears now have their sights set on their final road match of the regular season visiting No. 7 Florida State this Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
