Cal Swept By Clemson

Maria Știrbu Earns 5th Double-Double With Career-High 16 Digs

CLEMSON, S.C.  – The California volleyball team battled hard but lost in three to Clemson on Sunday at Jervey Gymnasium, as the Tigers (13-9, 1-9 ACC) put up a strong blocking game and kept the Golden Bears (6-14, 3-7) out of system just enough to earn the victory with set scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-18.

Cal freshman setter Maria Știrbu notched her fifth double-double of the year with 30 assists and a career-best, match-high 16 digs. Three other Golden Bears likewise reached double-digit digs (Sophia Johnson – 14, Francesca Popescu – 12, Peyton DeJardin – 10), while Mikayla Hayden and Dominique Phills shared the team lead with nine kills apiece.

For Clemson, setter Katherine Sandt had a double-double of her own with 38 assists and 10 digs while Mia McGrath (14 kills, .333) and Kate Hansen (nine kills, .421) led the attack. Hansen also put up six of the Tigers' 10 blocks on the day.

Both teams hit well early in the first set, with Cal building a four-point lead at 6-2 after a five-point run, but Clemson ended up claiming the advantage at 13-11 and held it for the rest of the set, riding six kills from McGrath and five total blocks to fend off a late 5-0 run from the Bears. Phills and McGrath each posted five kills in a back-and-forth Set Two, with Cal refusing to let Clemson go up by more than four and posting a pair of small scoring runs, but the Tigers scored the last four points to go up two sets to none. Finally, although the Bears kept Clemson to its lowest hitting percentage of the afternoon in the final set (.250), the home squad was able to put up a pair of four-point runs and keep Cal from scoring more than two points in a row, building a seven-point lead to seal the sweep.
