Bears Fall To Bruins In Conference Opener

Cal Suffers Second Loss Of The Season, First At Home

BERKELEY – The No. 2 California men's water polo team (11-2) fell in the MPSF opener to No. 1 UCLA, 14-7, on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
 
The Golden Bears suffered their second loss of the 2025 season at the hands of the Bruins, who handed the Bears their first loss at the Overnght MPSF Invitational last month. Cal was held to its lowest scoring output this season after finding the back of the net seven times in the contest.
 
Cal was led by Marci Szatmary, who recorded two goals and one assist in today's contest. Szatmary was the only Bear with multiple goals, which was his first game of the season with at least two goals.

  • Dominic Brown provided Cal's lone goal in the first period.
  • Seth Bousfield and Marci Szatmary added a goal in the second period.
  • Chase Wilson and Szatmary scored in the third.
  • Maddox Arlett and William Kelly recorded goals in the fourth period.
  • Aran Pina tallied a team-high four steals.
  • Cal was held to a 21.2 (7-for-33) shooting percentage.
  • UCLA shot 63.6 (14-for-22) percent through 32 minutes of action.
  • The Bruins had three players with at least two goals.
  • UCLA won all four sprints.
  • The Bears earned six exclusions.
  • Cal assisted on all seven goals.
  • Both teams converted 50 percent of their power plays; Cal (3/6), UCLA (5/10).
  • The Bears were outscored in each period of the contest.
  • UCLA never trailed in today's game.
  • Cal recorded a total of 11 steals.
