Passola Folch Wins In NCAA Singles Debut

ORLANDO, Fla. – California women's tennis senior Berta Passola Folch dominated her NCAA Singles Championship debut Tuesday at the USTA National Campus, with the 113th-ranked Golden Bear defeating UCLA's 81st-ranked Mayu Crossley 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round.
 
Passola Folch will face Texas A&M's 22nd-ranked Mia Kupres in the round of 32 on Wednesday at a time to be announced.
 
Cal's 17th-ranked Mao Mushika – making her second straight appearance in NCAA singles – pushed her opponent to three sets, but the junior fell to Charlotte's Ni Xi 7-6(2), 6-7(3), 7-5.
 
Two more Bears made their NCAA singles debuts in sophomores Greta Greco Lucchina and Naomi Xu. But 125th-ranked Greco Lucchina lost to USC's Jana Hossam 6-3, 6-1, while Xu fell to Appalachian State's fourth-seeded and 106th-ranked Savannah Dada-Mascoll 6-3, 6-3.
 
Greco Lucchina and Mushika return to the USTA National Campus courts Wednesday when they begin play in the NCAA Doubles Championship. The Cal duo plays Vanderbilt's fourth-seeded and 12th-ranked Celia-Belle Mohr and Sophia Webster in the opening round of 32 at a time to be announced.
