STANFORD – California volleyball faced its fourth straight top-25 opponent (third straight top-10 opponent) Wednesday night, traveling south to The Farm to face No. 5 Stanford at Maples Pavilion. Ultimately, it was the Cardinal (24-4, 15-2 ACC) who won the battle, sweeping the Golden Bears (7-20, 4-13) with scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-15.
Dominique Phills led Cal with six kills, while
Sophie Scott posted a season-high four blocks (two solo) and
Sophia Johnson recorded a team-high nine digs.
Stanford hit .312 as a team, with Julia Blyashov (14 kills, 10 digs) and Elia Rubin (11 kills, 17 digs) both recording double-doubles on the night.
Cal scored the first point of the match on a kill from
Peyton DeJardin, but an early eight-point run from Stanford gave the Cardinal a substantial lead that they never relinquished for the rest of the evening. The Bears mustered a 5-1 run in the middle of the first set, which included three blocks from Scott in four points to close the gap to four (13-9), but Cal only scored six more points before Stanford took the set win.
Set Two featured just one three-point run for Cal (a block from
Mikayla Hayden and
Ashley Li, a kill from Phills and a Stanford error) and ended with a six-point Cardinal run. Phills posted three more kills in the third and final set, while
Ashleigh Woodruff provided a spark off the bench with a season-high three kills on four attacks; it was not enough to overcome the home team, however, which posted its best offensive set of the night (.361) with an 87 percent sideout percentage to eventually take the win.
