Passola Folch Advances To NCAA Final

ORLANDO, Fla. – California women's tennis All-American Berta Passola Folch prevailed in a taut three-set semifinal match against Emily Welker of Ole Miss on Saturday to advance to the final of the NCAA Singles Championship.

The final pits 113th-ranked Passola Folch against North Carolina's third-ranked and Nos. 9-16 seeded Reese Brantmeier on Sunday at 8 a.m. PT.

The semifinal was the Cal senior's toughest test so far at the USTA National Campus. After winning the first set 6-2, she dropped the second set to 67th-ranked Welker 4-6. Passola Folch then survived one match point against in the third-set tiebreaker when she trailed 7-6. The Spaniard rallied to score the next three points to win the tiebreaker 9-7 and capture the match 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(7).

Passola Folch is the first Golden Bear to reach the NCAA singles final since Lynn Chi advanced to the championship match in 2014. The last NCAA individual final that Cal reached took place in 2016, when Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr played in the doubles championship match.

Cal has won the NCAA singles title twice. Suzi Babos won the Bears' first singles crown in 2006, while Jana Juricova added the 2011 title to the NCAA doubles championship that she won in 2009 with Mari Andersson.
