4 Bears Named ACWPC All-Americans

Freshman Akhvlediani Makes Second Team

Four members of the California men's water polo team earned ACWPC All-America honors as announced by the association Friday.

Freshman Beso Akhvlediani earned second-team honors while senior Albert Ponferrada, senior Nik Mirkovic and freshman Aran Pina were named honorable mentions.

Akhvlediani, who became the first Cal freshman to be named First Team All-MPSF since Nikolaos Papnikolaou in 2019, is now the first Golden Bear rookie to garner All-America honors since Max Casabella and Roberto Valera did so in 2021. The Tbilisi, Georgia, native made his offensive presence known in his first campaign, leading the Bears and ranking eighth in the conference with 59 goals, which is nearly double the amount of his next closest teammate. He paced the team with 82 points as well thanks to having the third-most assists with 23.

Ponferrada capped off his storied career with his second All-America selection after leading the team and ranking seventh in the MPSF with 13 field blocks. The two-time NCAA champion also ranked second on the team with 25 assists and fourth with 42 points.

Mirkovic's first All-American honor comes on the back of one of the best all-around seasons of his career posting 16 goals, 15 assists, and 12 steals. He was one of  the featured sprinters for the team as well and won the bulk of his matchups.

Pina made a splash in his first collegiate season in the cage playing in 21 games for Cal. The freshman ranked fifth in the conference with 167 saves and was eighth with a 0.4465 save percentage. He eclipsed double-digit saves on eight occasions including a career-high 15 in Cal's 13-11 win over No. 2 USC on Oct. 5.
