Bears Shut Out Wildcats, 46-0
Seven Players Score As Cal Rolls Past Arizona
BERKELEY – Seven different players registered tries and the California rugby team recorded its third consecutive shutout in a 46-0 victory over visiting Arizona at rain-drenched Witter Rugby Field on Saturday afternoon.
Cade Crist scored a pair of tries while Solomon Wiliams,
Rand Santos,
Max Threlkeld,
Ieremia Ieremia,
Jack Byszio and
Joe Kirsten each also got on the scoreboard as the Golden Bears moved to 4-0 in the XVs season.
"It was a solid effort from our boys," Cal team captain Charles Walsh said. "Our defense was good, but there were a couple things in our attack that let us down. We're proud of our performance but we've got a lot of work to do. We wish Arizona the best going forward."
Williams began the scoring with a try at the 13:23 mark and Santos recorded a successful conversion. Tries by Crist, Santos and Threlkeld pushed the Bears' lead to 22-0 at halftime.
It was a defensive-minded second half until Ieremia notched a try with just over 15 minutes remaining. Cal tacked on three more tries – including two more successful conversions by Santos – to polish off the scoring.
In the reserve grade match afterward, the Bears beat the Wildcats, 71-0.
"Winter's day in California. Not the easiest conditions for the players," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "We thank Arizona for the visit and we are especially thankful for them traveling a reserve team. Lots of young men got to play rugby today."
Cal continues its home stand next Saturday when it hosts UCLA at 1 p.m. PT at Witter Rugby Field.
