In recognition of her standout performances over the weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, California track & field's Giavonna Meeks was named the ACC Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for the Golden Bears' fourth weekly honor of the year. Meeks, who transferred from Vanderbilt over the offseason, previously received the honor on Jan. 28 and is the first ACC women's field athlete to repeat as an award winner this season.
 
The NCAA leader in the women's weight throw, Meeks has a personal best of 23.55m (77-3.25) in the event (second-best in program history) and nearly equaled that mark Friday with her first-place throw of 23.52m (77-2). She is one of just two women to cross the 23-meter barrier this season, with only Minnesota's Anthonett Nabwe (23.21m/76-1.75) joining her in that category.
 
Meeks also posted a mark of 15.65m (51-4.25) in the shot put Saturday, her best such outing as a Bear and sixth-farthest mark in program history. Currently, Cal's women's weight throw squad ranks third in the nation, while its women's shot put unit ranks 18th.
 
"Giavonna has done an excellent job of preparing throughout the season. Within a short period of time, she's been able to make a positive impact on our team," said assistant coach Mohamad Saatara, who leads the throws unit. "Her performances are a testament to her commitment and focus on being a great competitor and leader."
 
Meeks will next appear at the upcoming ACC Indoor Championships, scheduled to be held at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville, Kentucky, from March 1-3.
